About us

Welcome to the Environmental Ecology Lab at Seoul National University!

Landscape architects transform the land surface properties by practices in design, planning, and management. The change of land surface properties directly influences the exchanges of water, energy and carbon between land and the atmosphere, which modulates micrometeorology to the climate system. We study theory, make observations, and develop models to understand and predict better the land-atmosphere interactions. We want to answer several simple scientific questions: 1) where are carbon and water? 2) what are their quantities? 3) how do they move? To answer these questions, we use a range of tools including satellite remote sensing, near-surface remote sensing, eddy covariance system, land surface model, and GIS. We aim to incorporate our scientific knowledge into environmental planning and management to achieve low carbon societies and maintain sustainable water resources. Above all, we envision that the integration of land-atmosphere interactions (vertical process) and landscape ecology (horizontal processes across landscape elements) will enable us to see landscapes as a 3-dimensional complex system that undergo dynamic interactions constantly. This novel way of thinking and viewing, the central tenet of our lab, could provide creative methods in environmental planning and management.

Who we are:

  • We are environmental ecologists who integrate theory, observations and modeling to better understand and predict terrestrial carbon, water and energy cycles in a changing climate

Vision:

  • A sustainable world where ecological information is available and accessible to anyone

Mission:

  • To monitor ecological processes around the world all the time with exponential technologies
  • To create next generation of environmental ecologists who are equipped with high levels of ethics in research and education, have fundamental understanding in terrestrial carbon, water and carbon cycles, and are creative and willing to accept challenging tasks towards a sustainable and resilient socio-ecological system

Culture:

  • To pursue dynamic and vivid research atmosphere in the lab by encouraging discussion, talking and mingling with each other to invoke creative, smart ideas through collective intelligence
