[Updates]

2016-09-20: We are going to re-compute BESS products with updated MODIS LAI product (version 6). The updated BESS products will be released in a couple of months.

[Description]
Breathing Earth System Simulator (BESS) is a simplified process-based model that couples atmosphere and canopy radiative transfers, canopy photosynthesis, transpiration, and energy balance. The original paper was published in 2011 (Ryu et al., 2011). Recently, we comprehensively evaluated BESS GPP and ET products against FLUXNET 2015 dataset with MPI-BGC and official MODIS products at multiple spatial and temporal scales (Jiang and Ryu 2016). We provide 1) fine resolution products (1-5 km resolution, same data structure with MODIS Land products) and 2) coarse resolution products (0.5 degree) for regional, climate research. We open the following products to the public.

  • GPP (Gross Primary Productivity):
    – 1 km resolution with 8-daily interval between 2000 and 2015 (sinusoidal projection)
    – 0.5 degree resolution with monthly interval between 2000 and 2015 (geographic)
  • ET (Evapotranspiration)
    – 1 km resolution with 8-daily interval between 2000 and 2015 (sinusoidal projection)
    – 0.5 degree resolution with monthly interval between 2000 and 2015 (geographic)
  • Potential ET (Potential evapotranspiration)
    – 5 km resolution with 8-daily interval between 2000 and 2015 (sinusoidal projection)
    – 0.5 degree resolution with monthly interval between 2000 and 2015 (geographic)
  • BESS Codes (in MATLAB) with example dataset

We require filling below registration form to access to the data. We do this to inform data users of product updates and fixing bugs. Once you access the ftp, check README file which explains data structure, scaling factor, fill value, and id/pw of the ftp.
